Who is God? A question that has been asked throughout everyone’s lives. Whether you are religious or not, when you hear about God, you begin to wonder and ask questions. What is a God? How did he come to be? Who is he? What is his purpose? And so on. These are questions that I have asked myself in my life, and because of that, I have come to know God personally. Everyone is on their own journey in this life. It is not fair to compare one relationship with God to another. However, through my own research, study, thoughts, and prayers, I do know that God is real and that He is our loving Heavenly Father. We are daughters and sons of a Heavenly Father who loves us unconditionally. But how do we communicate with him? And how does he speak to us?
The number one thing that we can do to speak to God is pray, and how do you pray? We begin by addressing Heavenly Father, saying something like, “Dear Heavenly Father,” and sharing our thoughts, feelings, struggles, desires, and so on. I like to think of talking to him like a simple conversation that you would have with your parents or a friend. Then we end our prayer by addressing our Savior by saying, “In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.” We can pray anywhere and anytime. In fact, God wants us to. But you are probably thinking, “How do I know he is speaking to me and giving me answers?” Well, my number one advice would be to take some time after your prayer and sit in silence. Have an open heart and be okay with the answer “no” or “not yet.” Sometimes I don’t get an answer immediately, and most of the time I don’t. This is where the faith and action come in on our part. We must trust in our Father in Heaven that he will guide us and give us answers to our prayers. Be patient because you may receive your answer in a way you won’t expect.
Some examples of how I receive my answers to prayers have been through other people giving me advice or saying something that I knew wasn’t a coincidence. Another way I know is through his Spirit. There are multiple different ways to feel his spirit, and he speaks to us all differently but in a way that we need. This article is great in helping you understand and come to know how God speaks to you in recognizing the Spirit. But how do we keep and maintain a relationship with God? The answer is simple. Pray and study his gospel. You can do that by reading scriptures, listening to podcasts, General Conference talks, going to church, and so on. Doing these things allows the spirit and God to be in our lives to not only give us answers but to lead and guide us through this crazy world.
