You may be wondering about this blog prompt. What is an article of faith? In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Joseph Smith, who was called of God to be a prophet and helped restore Jesus Christ’s gospel to the Earth today, wrote these statements about what we believe. There are thirteen of them. Today I am focusing on the 13th Article of Faith. Which states, “We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul – We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.” This Article of Faith has always stood out to me in a way of living life. I think it is a great simplification of what I believe in, and that is those things above.

How can we use this article of faith to guide our decisions in what we create and consume? In the first section of this Article of Faith, it says, “We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous and doing good to all men…” When creating content, we can keep these attributes in mind and ask ourselves, ‘Am I being true?’ Honest? And so on. It is important to keep these in mind as we consume entertainment. Asking ourselves these questions can help us a great deal in determining what we watch.

Why is it so important to have standards on what you consume as well as create? Whether it is the things in the Article of Faith that you live by, similar standards, or different ones, it is important to make sure you have guidelines on what you do consume and create. When you are consuming negative media and entertainment, it starts to effect your life. What can be scary is that you don’t notice it until you have gone so low. I have been there and have realized the importance of understanding that what I consume does affect my life. Something that I like to do is ask myself, “How does this make me feel?” and usually I can figure out if it is something that is good for me to consume or not. Being able to do this can allow us to avoid letting what we consume control our lives or affect us in a negative way. Having standards on what you post is so important because no matter what you put out on the internet, it is there forever. Even when you delete posts. It can also impact your ability to secure a job in the professional world. More employers than not will look up your social media.
