Do you remember when the shutdown happened in 2020 due to Covid-19? I remember it clearly; I was a senior in High School, helping with the drill/dance team tryouts and getting ready to celebrate our winning competition season in Disneyland the following week. Well, we did not go to Disneyland due to everything being closed. This was a time in my life when I sort of lost myself. School was ending, dance was ending, I graduated, and I didn’t know who I was. My hobby of dance was gone, which was my identity for so long. I worked full-time with another part-time job and found myself leaning on social media for my comfort and spare time. Doing this caused me to really see how much social media changed since the pandemic.
Before the pandemic, I remember strictly only following friends, people I went to school with, and family. I followed a few artists here and there, but nothing like I do now. I would scroll through social media and it would eventually end. There were no reels and no endless scrolling. Kind of crazy to think back to that time when if you posted too much, that was cringey, and now the goal is to post every day if you are trying to grow your business or self on these platforms. Now, social media has so many possibilities and a way for you to grow your brand or self in different ways.
If you had told me in High School that this was how social media would be, I wouldn’t know what to say, but my jaw would be on the floor. I would probably start posting more and putting myself out there. Anyways, it makes sense that the pandemic caused more video creation and more influencers. Being locked in your home, either with family, roommates, or even living on your own, can become very isolating and unhealthy for our minds and bodies. Less movement and less human interaction. It was a lonely time for many, and social media was a good way to connect. Through that brought about influencers and now there are even reality television shows due to how big influencers have gotten. Who would’ve thought?
How has social media shaped your life over the years? Let me know in the comments.
