How young is too young for an iPhone?

Blog

How old were you when you received your first iPhone? Some might be older because that didn’t start coming out until the early 2000’s, but as a girl who did grow up with iPhones, I did not receive one unit I was fifteen. I was one of the last ones in my friend group to get one, which obviously is okay, but at the time, I felt so left out. Although I did have an iPod touch, and that did almost everything an iPhone did, other than I didn’t have internet service. The only thing I had was WIFI for it to work. I did have a small cell phone that I would take with me when I was out and about to contact my parents.

With all that being said, I am grateful I didn’t have an iPhone as quickly as others did. I like to look at it as a blessing. Although at that age it was hard, looking back, I am grateful my parents waited. I am grateful for this because I wasn’t tied to my phone all the time. I didn’t have quick access to things and had to be sure I had WIFI. In my opinion, I believe iPhones are good for kids when they start entering the Jr High age of school. Between 12-13, I think is great. Although I didn’t receive mine until I was fifteen, I did have that iPod touch, which was almost the same thing that I used for my social media, games, and entertainment. I do feel that anywhere below the age of 12 is too early. I believe kids need to be responsible for their phone and an iPhone is not a cheap product. Kids also need their childhood to have fun and enjoy it, not be so sucked into an iPhone. Now this is just my opinion and would never judge anyone for giving their child an iPhone earlier. I think technology is okay for kids, but it is important to have a max amount of time set for them. I believe there needs to be moderation, and that includes the adults, too.

Children need to make memories and have fun. Think about your favorite memory, and it most likely did not include your iPhone or technology. I know some of my favorite childhood memories were making movies with my friends. I think this is a great example of the balance of technology and kids. We would film our movies on our iPods and then use iMovie or an app to edit them together. These taught me skills that I actually use today. But we did not need iPhones for that. There are many ways that kids can be creative and have fun without technology. How old do you think is a good age for children to have an iPhone? Leave me a comment.
