I love this quote by Gordon B. Hinckley as part of this prompt: “Each of us can do a little better than we have been doing. We can be a little kinder. We can be a little more merciful. We can be a little more forgiving. We can put behind us our weaknesses of the past, and go forth with new energy and increased resolution to improve the world about us, in our homes, in our places of employment, in our social activities.” Based on this quote, we can apply editing principles to living Jesus Christ’s gospel in various ways.
The first way we can apply editing principles to living the gospel is by being kind and honest. When making edits, whether that is for yourself and others. It is important to keep in mind that we must be honest to make the corrections. When editing, it needs to be as correct as possible, especially before publishing. But there is a way to go about giving corrections and suggestions. Speaking from personal experience, I am always open to making things right and correcting. I want people to tell me, but I resonate more when people communicate with me in kindness and grace. I do believe there is a time and a place for being more stern, but there should always be kindness when giving corrections.
Another way we can apply editing is by knowing your audience. God knows us each individually; that is why he speaks to us so personally and in a way that we individually can understand. He knows us better than our own selves; it is important to know the audience and who we are speaking to. This allows us to make edits in a way that helps us understand who the audience is and the way that we should speak to them. I think it is great to include God in this process, as he knows us all.
Lastly, I think living His Gospel in our daily lives doesn’t just go with our personal lives, that is every aspect of our lives. That includes work, school, extracurricular activities, families, co-workers, friends, and so on. Living the Gospel will help us in our editing as we can be forgiving, give advice with kindness and grace, write with honesty, and speak to our audience the best way we can. What are some ways you apply Jesus Christ’s Gospel to your editing skills? Leave me a comment.
