Have you ever been listening to a song, noticed the lyrics, and realized how much you relate to them? Have you ever gotten emotional or thought to yourself, “I never realized they said that.” If you have never related to or genuinely listened to the lyrics of music, you are missing out. Written lyrics, in my opinion, are literature. Yes, there is some music out there that some may not think is literature, but I believe that no matter what music you can connect with, it is literature. If it makes you feel something or it moves you in a way that makes you remember it, then that is art and a beautiful creation.
Lyrics are literature because they not only make you feel something, but they also tell stories. They are like novels, but in a short and condensed form. You get to hear a story for three to five minutes most of the time. One song that comes to mind that reminds me of literature is Taylor Swift’s song “All Too Well”. Taylor has a regular version and a ten-minute version. It tells a story of one of her relationships from start to beginning, where it started and where it went wrong. Another song, actually an album, that comes to mind is written by JVKE. His album was written from top to bottom, sharing when you first fall in love to the end of heartbreak. The album is called “This is what ___ feels like.” If you have never listened to this album, it is a must and is such beautiful story telling.
Another reason I believe lyrics are literature is that they have the power it has on rhythm and repetition just like poems. It adds a whole other layer of meaning and view on music. When you listen to a song and really connect with the lyrics, you connect emotionally. A song that goes on repeat for me that I have connected emotionally with is a song written by Ruel & DMA’s called “What A Life”. The reason I connect with this song is that I was coming out of a dark time in my life, and it was like the light at the end of the tunnel. The song is a reminder to me that life is beautiful even when times are hard. It reminded me that I wasn’t stuck in that hard time, but there was an end to the trial. I am so grateful for that hard time because it taught me so much, and I wouldn’t be where I am without that experience. So yes, lyrics are literature. What is a song that you connect with and find to be the literature in your life?
